NBA or NHL
So me and my lovely lady ( no link) are off to New York in February - courtesy of some very cheap deals with BA.
I want to take in some good ol` American sport at Madison Square Garden.....but I`m unsure between the NY KNicks or the NY Rangers.
The ticket prices are roughly the same ( and not exactly cheap) so I`m wondering which would provide the best entertainment/atmosphere/ bang for my bucks??
Over to WHO....

Re: NBA or NHL
Went to see the Knicks a couple of times a long time ago and the Wizards once. Loved the experience but was very different to the football. Supporters seem a lot more interested in the food and drink than the match. Everyone was constantly getting up from there seats to go to buy more food. Weirdly the only time they all seemed to stay in there seats was the half time show.

Sadly not done NHL so cant compare, they look like they take the sport more seriously though.

NHL for the fights, if you're lucky a game may break out

Lived in Dallas went to watch the mavericks all the time. If you're ballsy see the touts, tickets weirdly cheaper and you can get premium seats , go in low .

Re: NBA or NHL
Hands down NHL, and if NYC had an AHL team, I'd recommend that as there would be many more fights. It's also a game that is much better live than on TV.

Basketball is unwatchable for me. There are something like 6 timeouts per team per half (so 24 in all) plus corporate/tv timeouts, plus the clock stops after every basket and foul and every time the ball goes out of bounds. If it's a close game, all action happens in the last 2 minutes. It's simply way too slow.

NHL is the only North American sport that I can watch.

Re: NBA or NHL
Have done both and found NHL a hard watch live giiven the speed of the PUCK & probably because I knew little about it.
Though I have an aunt (beloved aunt) who is approx 90 and moved to Canada as a young woman who tells me she doesnt watch much these days as she preferred the old school madly violent game of decades ago. Amusing as she is a softly spoken church going academic & lawyer.

Much prefer NBA coming for a country that actually plays while it seems a very very minor sport in the UK.
Always try and catch a Knicks game when I am there .... last time was when Lebron James was playing for Cleveland & he single handedly beat a shit Knicks team.
They are a bit better now and have always had a good night out.
One (ONE) vote for NBA. Go Knicks!

Re: NBA or NHL
Been to both at different times in my life.

If you are pretty unfamiliar with both, the NBA might have more easily recognisable "wow" moments (dunks, no look passes)

High level hockey skills are so quick and near the ice that they can be missed if you don't know what to look for. Fights are fights but they are short and if you don't care who wins, is it not that exciting.

Ice Hockey is shit and you can't see what' the fuck is going on. But at least the Rangers were good when I went so the atmosphere was decent. Fucking cold though. Seen the Knicks a few times and they've all been terrible teams but enjoyed it much more. Plus the Knicks are actually a decent side now, so probably a better game to watch.

Been to both and its a very personal choice, as I love all sports, but I would watch the Knicks. Get someone to explain the rule nuances, such as shot clock. Its also in the garden which is an iconic venue...

The athleticism is unbelievable, its very technical, the blocking and body positioning that takes place is great to watch. Popcorn is not as good as the bowl though. :)

We can learn a lot from this sport when it comes to attacking corners and putting blockers in the way of their defenders as per the Zouma goal v Scouse.

Haven't seen the Knicks but went to a Rangers game a couple of years ago.

Great fun. Proper American entertainment in its proper place, unlike the uncomfortable feeling when they try to introduce US tackiness to sport over here.

Hadn't a clue what was happening but still really enjoyed it. House band up in the Gods (who even played some RUSH!). At half-time, reuniting kids with their military parents that they thought were overseas. All US hoopla was there.

Probably the most enjoyable part of that trip to NY.

If you are going early feb, get tickets to Billy Joel playing at the garden rather than the basketball or hockey.

He plays once a month, its great and is very NYC...

Re: NBA or NHL
NHL is excellent

Not a great TV sport sadly as it’s so fast and puck is small, but live matches are superb.

Worth looking at rules before you go (assume YouTube will have a good video) as you’ll then enjoy it a lot better.

Basketball bores the hell out of me.

I went a few times to Caps games in DC as my wife at the time’s law firm had free tickets there. I watched them win the Stanley Cup recently.

Strangely enough the Stanley cup ended up in my neighbour’s garden in Maine, I lived next door to Kevin Dineen at the time and he was being interviewed with it in his garden.

Ice hockey is better live…. So fast and amazing how quick the players are on the ice.

I’d say NHL over NBA.

Besides the knicks suck.

Re: NBA or NHL
NHL by a country mile! And odds on you will see a decent fight and plenty of dirty play, tripping slamming of players into the side of the rink etc

The NBA is a freak show, 7 foot plus players, its like ping pong back and forth scoring on just about every attack, turnover to the other side and repeat, every so often the ball hits the rim of the hoop and no goal, lots of ho ha, popocrn and lard arse supporters, the cheerleaders were nice but i think in this modern era that sort of stuff doesnt happen any more, sexist etc.

Personally I wouldn't go to either, would bore the shit out of me, fuck watching a game of hockey, BUT I would love to go to NYC again, and as said below I'd go to see Billy Joel.

American Sports are shit, don't bother. Find a decent pub/restaurant instead

One of the things I found interesting about the Rangers game, was how co-ordinated all the elements were, presumably in an attempt to prevent the audience getting bored.

The moment play stopped, either the band started, the screen sprang into life or something else happened. It would carry on until the moment play restarted. I found it interesting as a whole 'show'.

Amazing production really.

Re: NBA or NHL
NHL in my opinion. Hockey is pretty easy to understand and boils down to getting the puck in the net.

NBA just seems to have a bigger barrier to entry in regards to the rules. I still don't understand the whole fouling system. When I watched it, it was pretty hard to understand what was going on apart from the scoring.

also, don't do the MSG tour on game days. waste of time as you do go in the dressing rooms or the pre match areas.
